Win-rate confidence calculator

Updated August 2026 · by Tom Howcroft

How trustworthy is your win rate? Get the 95% confidence band around it from your sample of hours, and whether it clears zero.

What does this result mean?

A poker win-rate confidence calculator places a 95% range around the BB/hr observed in your sample. The measured rate sits at the centre, while the low and high figures show how much uncertainty remains once hours and session-to-session swing are considered. If the low end crosses zero, the sample is still compatible with break-even or losing play even when the headline hourly is positive. If the whole band sits above zero, the evidence for a real edge is stronger, but it is never a guarantee about future games. The range narrows slowly as hours accumulate and assumes the entered swing rate represents the games played. Use it to label a result as early, directional or reasonably established, then keep venue, stake and game mix consistent enough that the sample still describes the decision you are making.

A win rate only means something next to the hours behind it. This shows the 95% band around your figure and whether the whole band sits above break-even.

Example

A +6.4 BB/hr rate over 1,200 hours, with a realistic session-to-session swing, has a 95 percent low that clears zero, a real measured edge. The same rate over 600 hours still crosses zero.

Estimates for study and planning only, not a profit promise. Overshove tracks your real sample so these inputs come from your own data.

What does this calculator compute?

The calculator builds a 95% band around your observed BB/hr using hours and session swing. A point estimate is the centre; the band is the honest answer.

When should the result change your decision?

Use it before treating your hourly as proven. If the low end still crosses zero, the right read is directionally useful, not settled.

How to use the answer responsibly

Treat the calculator as a planning tool, not a verdict on one session. A live poker input is usually an estimate: your win rate is noisy, your standard deviation changes by game type, and your future volume rarely matches the clean number you type into a form. The useful habit is to save the assumptions beside the result so you know what would need to change before the decision changes.

If the result pushes against what you wanted to do, do not smooth the inputs until the answer feels nicer. Make the conservative version first, using a lower win rate, a higher swing rate or fewer weekly hours. Then run the optimistic version. The space between those answers is the real decision area: where a shot needs a stop rule, where a move up needs more buy-ins, or where a good-looking hourly still needs a bigger sample.

Overshove calculators become more useful when the inputs come from your own logged sessions. Rake, tips, travel, hours, stake mix and session length all change the number. A generic benchmark can teach the shape of the problem, but a clean personal log gives the number you should actually act on.

Questions

How many hours until my win rate is real?

Treat under about 300 live hours as a weak signal and around 1,000 hours as mostly trustworthy. This tool shows the 95 percent band for your exact sample.

Why does the band cross zero early on?

Because the spread of plausible true win rates is wider than your measured edge until the sample grows. It is normal, not a sign you are a losing player.
