Reading the same faces

Updated July 2026 · by Tom Howcroft

Online, the pool is endless and anonymous. Live, you sit with the same faces every week, and that is an edge, if you write it down instead of re-learning it each time.

Reads evaporate without a record

You figure out that seat seven never folds an overpair, then forget by next Friday and pay him off again. A read you do not record is a read you re-buy. A notebook turns one session of observation into a permanent edge against a recurring opponent.

Structure beats scribbles

Tag reads by venue and seat, with a profile and a tell or two. Searchable, organised by room, private to you. When you sit down at Aria, the regs you have profiled are right there, not in a memory you are not sure you can trust.

The best notes are decision-shaped

A useful player note is not a biography. It should tell you what decision changes next time. Value bet thin. Do not bluff missed draws. Isolates limpers too wide. Overfolds rivers after checking twice. Those notes are short because they are meant to be used under pressure. Long stories feel satisfying in the moment but rarely survive the next session.

Separate evidence from confidence

One showdown is a clue, not a read. Three repeated lines across sessions deserve more weight. A structured notebook should let you record the spot and the confidence level separately, so a fresh observation does not become a permanent label too quickly. The discipline is to update the note when new evidence arrives, not to worship the first pattern you noticed.

Your local pool is a compounding asset

Live poker rewards memory differently from online volume. You may see the same weekday regular for years, and a single accurate note can save money every time the spot appears. That is why the notebook belongs beside the session log. The read is tied to the room, the hand, the stake and the date, so you can see whether it is still current or just a stale story from a different version of the player.
