Study log

Updated June 2026 · by Tom Howcroft

A study log captures warm-ups, cool-downs, leak tags and next actions, tying your study to the hands you actually played.

In short: A record of what you study and why.

Why Study log matters

Write down the assumption you tested, including any range or sizing choice, so you can reproduce the review later. Study terms matter because the money is not in owning more data; it is in turning the right data into the next rep. A serious log should tell you what to study next, not just whether last night was up or down.

Worked example

Example

Tagging a misplayed turn and queuing it for study is the study log in action. The useful part is not the label itself; it is the decision it changes. If the example changes your stake, stop-loss, review queue or next study block, write it cleanly in the log.

How to apply it

Attach study to the session that created it. Mark the hand, name the leak, write the next action, and close the loop after review. That keeps study tied to the games you actually play instead of drifting into random solver work. For Study log, the practical question is whether the label changes a bankroll, session or study decision. If it does not change a decision, it belongs in a note, not in the headline read.

Overshove currently records sessions. Keep a separate study note for the hand, your read, what you checked and the next action. In-app study, leak tags and Coach Pack are in development. Use the same spelling every time, then link it back to poker study log so the page, calculator or guide beside the term does useful work.

Common mistakes

  • +Studying the clean spot while ignoring the one that cost money.
  • +Writing vague notes that cannot become a next action.
  • +Treating review as punishment after losing, rather than routine work after every meaningful session.

Questions players actually ask

How should I use Study log in a session log?

Use Study log as a decision label, not decoration. Log the raw session first, then attach the term only where it explains a stake, bankroll, variance or study choice you can review later.

What is the common mistake with Study log?

The common mistake is reading the term without the sample and context behind it. In live cash, a clean label still needs stake, hours, stack depth, cost and result data before it tells you anything reliable.
